A 14-year-old girl has died after a horrific rollercoaster accident which saw part of it fly off the track during the ride.
The terrifying incident happed today at the Tivoli Friheden park in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, with several people trapped up to 10 feet above the ground.
Police rushed to the theme park at 12.50pm local time after reports that a rollercoaster car was stuck in the Cobra ride.
The two rear seats of the ride had broken away from the rest and were hanging under the wagon train, the park’s manager, Henrik Olsen, told local newspaper Aarhus Stiftstidende.
The popular amusement park was evacuated and witnesses, as well as relatives of the victims, have been given access to psychological support.
“A mother stood by the Cobra and looked up while she exclaimed several times ‘my children, my children’,” one worried witness said.
East Jutland Police confirmed that a 14-year-old girl from Copenhagen has died and that her relatives have been told.
A 13-year-old boy sustained injuries to one hand, police said, and his parents have also been notified.
The cause of the accident is not yet known but technical assistance has been requested from experts, according to the park’s Facebook page.
In a statement, the park said: “It’s hard for us to put into words the tragic accident of today, where a girl lost her life and a boy was injured.
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with the girl and the girl’s relatives, family and friends. Our thoughts are also with the boy, our staff and the many visitors at the park earlier today.
“We are cooperating with East Jutland Police and are now awaiting the technical investigations regarding the accident.
“A hotline has been established if you have been to Tivoli Friheden and need professional crisis help or are relatives on telephone.”
The amusement park will remain shut on Friday, and it’s not the first incident to involve the Cobra ride.
In 2008, four young people were injured when a row of two chairs fell off, nyheder.co.uk reports.
At the time, Cobra was Tivoli Freedom’s latest ride.
