While vegans might be happy about this advance, a lot of Americans are going to be hesitant to give lab-meat a shot.
For the first time, the Food and Drug Administration is giving the green light to meat grown in a laboratory.
The agency said in a notice on Wednesday that a “cultivated chicken” product made by Upside Foods is safe to eat.
The FDA “evaluated the information submitted to the agency and has no further questions at this time about the firm’s safety conclusion,” the agency stated.
“This is a watershed moment in the history of food,” Uma Valeti, CEO and founder of the Berkeley, California-based company, said in a statement. “U.S. consumers will soon have the chance to eat delicious meat that’s grown directly from animal cells.”
The cells from a single chicken allow for the cultivation of the same amount of poultry that now comes from hundreds of thousands of farmed birds, according to his company.
Although the agency found Upside Foods’ chicken safe to eat, the product is not approved to be sold. Upside’s remaining hurdles before it can take its product to the market involve the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its Food Safety and Inspection Service.
“As this product comes closer to entering the U.S. market, we are closely coordinating with USDA-FSIS to ensure it is properly regulated and labeled,” the FDA said.
Valeti, a cardiologist, started Upside in 2015 after coming up with the idea for what’s now called “cultivated” meat while working at the Mayo Clinic growing human heart cells in a lab, he recently told NPR.
Scientists can take cells from an animal with a needle biopsy, feed them nutrients to proliferate and produce meat, he reasoned.
Once given regulatory approval to sell its cultivated products, including a chicken fillet, Upside’s production facility in Emeryville, California, will be able to produce more than 50,000 pounds a year, according to the company.
Scientists say roughly a third of all human-produced greenhouse gases stem from food production, especially cattle.
Proponents of lab-grown meat say it would help cut back on methane emissions and help combat global warming.
Will cost 10 – 1000 times what natural meat costs… and probably cause cancer… so Democrats will love it…
Vegans would have nothing to do with this kind of meat anyway. Vegans are vegans because it is a healthier diet.
As far as carnivorous me, I am going with a wait and see attitude.
It makes sense. Eat a steak or a chicken that did not involved killing an animal and did not use as much water or plant material to create. It seem economical and far less cruel than animal factories. Everybody should visit a slaughterhouse as part of their education
I have worked in a Slaughterhouse and I can Honestly say that the cows and pigs don’t suffer, very much. And yes, I still work there and YES, I still eat Meat. So set down and Shut up, so I can enjoy my Steak.
No thank you! I am not eating ANYTHING grown in the lab! I can see it twenty or thirty years down the line that it caused cancer ir some other bizarre illness causing human tissues to grow inside is like some horror movie. How gross for one and two reckless. These environmentalist and their green stupidity. Once we destroy mankind like humans usually do the world will continue on to recover aling with the animals. It serves us right when people are messing with things they shouldn’t.
I certainly won’t trust the FDA’s new food. It’s probably contaminated with nano particles and chips to make us into cyborgs or kill us in the long run. I would love to stuff that crap down THEIR throats and see how they like it.
