On November 25, the former K-Pop idol Kris Wu was sentenced to 13 years in prison, followed by deportation by the Chaoyang District People’s Court in China. He was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting minors.

Since Wu is a Canadian citizen, after the completion of his prison time, he will be deported to the country if the first trial is confirmed. Based on this possibility, there are speculations in Chinese media that Wu might be subjected to chemical castration once he is sent back as a part of the standard procedure that Canada follows for sex offenders.

Chemical castration refers to a medical procedure where a sex offender is injected with drugs or hormones to suppress their sexual desires forcibly. In Canada, this means is often adapted by the Canadian Correctional Service, which also provides counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy parallelly.

Netizens had a divided reaction to the speculation. While some of them feel it is appropriate to deal with a convict like Wu, others feel uncomfortable hopping on unsubstantiated claims until there is an official confirmation.

In 2021, Kris Wu was embroiled in sexual assault and harassment allegations by Du Meizhu. Another alleged victim, an underaged girl from the United States, stepped up to accuse him of sexual assault.

After Kris Wu’s side, on July 18, 2021, denied the claims, procurators approved his arrest after carrying out the investigation process according to the law.
