Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has caused controversy after declining to attend King Charles III’s coronation ceremony on May 6.
According to a source, the actress-turned-royal decided to skip the event to avoid unnecessary drama and to prevent taking attention away from the new king.
The source added that Meghan hopes her decision not to attend the coronation will be seen as unselfish and keep the attention on King Charles.
Despite ongoing issues with the royal family, Meghan had hoped for her children, Archie and Lilibet, to have a relationship with their grandfather, especially given her estranged connection with her own family.
The source said that Meghan does not want any more rifts and wants her children to know their grandfather, Charles, particularly when they will not know their other grandfather.
Instead of attending the coronation, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have planned a small gathering in the US to celebrate Archie’s fourth birthday on the same day.
Harry is expected to make every effort to return home in time for the intimate party, which is likely to include Archie’s school friends, their mothers, and perhaps a few of the royal couple’s celebrity friends.
The source made it clear that the celebration would not be a lavish event like “My Super Sweet 16” or Portia de Rossi’s 50th.
Meghan and Prince Harry have been distanced from the royal family since the release of their Netflix docuseries and the Duke of Sussex’s tell-all memoir, which both aired out the royals’ dirty laundry.
While the relationship remains strained, Meghan hopes that her decision to skip the coronation will be seen as a gesture of goodwill and will help to avoid any further tension.
