In an unusual move, Hunter Biden’s defense team is asking the judge to summon former President Donald Trump as well as a number of former Trump administration officials in connection with his Delaware firearm charges. The probe of Biden’s gun-related charges, according to attorney Abbe Lowell, is the product of “incessant, improper, and partisan pressure.”

In addition to Trump, former acting AG Jeffrey Rosen, former acting Deputy AG Richard Donoghue, and former Attorney General Bill Barr are also the targets of the subpoenas. The motion argues that unlawful pressure from then-President Trump affected the initial inquiry into Biden’s taxes and overseas business dealings.

“The initial investigation was born out of a wider probe into Mr. Biden’s taxes and foreign business dealings,” according to the request. “Public reporting reveals certain instances that appear to suggest incessant, improper, and partisan pressure applied by then-President Trump to Messrs. Rosen, Donoghue, and Barr in relation to an investigation of Mr. Biden.”

In order to strengthen his defense, Biden requests specific information from these former Department of Justice officials as well as the former President, according to the request, which goes on to say that Biden’s rights to the Fifth Amendment may have been violated and that the case may be an act of retaliation or selective prosecution stemming from an intense pressure campaign during the previous administration.

Neither Trump’s attorneys nor the other parties listed in the request have reacted as of yet.

After January 2024, Biden will stand trial for gun-related offenses; if found guilty of all counts, he may serve a maximum of 25 years in jail. The allegations include providing false information when purchasing a firearm, providing false information when a federal firearms license dealer requests it, and possessing a firearm while abusing illegal drugs or abusing them.

Biden had previously this summer consented to enter a guilty plea to minor tax charges, which, if he remained out of jail for two years, would have also addressed the gun allegations. But once a court voiced reservations about the arrangement, the deal fell through.

House Republicans are investigating President Biden for possible impeachment in an effort to link his father’s business transactions to Hunter Biden’s while the former is still engaged in court. The political environment is becoming more complicated when President Biden runs for reelection in 2024 as a result of this inquiry.
