More than 30 Chicago-area students were taken to the hospital Friday morning after three school buses collided while heading to a field trip, officials confirmed.

The crash happened near Midway Plaisance and Dorchester Avenue in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, according to local outlets WBBM and WFLD. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Authorities said one adult and 31 students were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation. The buses were carrying students and staff from Meadow Ridge Elementary School in Orland Park, who were on their way to visit a museum at the time of the crash.

In a statement, Orland School District 135 said some students were treated for minor injuries while others were safely brought back to school.

“We know this news can be concerning for families, and we want to assure our community that all students are receiving the care and attention they need,” district officials shared. “Our staff and first responders responded quickly and with great care, and we are deeply grateful for their support.”

The district confirmed that families of all students involved have been contacted. “The safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority,” officials added.

The incident remains under investigation.
