Guests at a North Dakota hotel were left horrified after catching an employee using a hot tub to “wash” dirty bed sheets — a shocking scene that’s now triggered a state health investigation.

The disturbing video, filmed at the Expressway Suites in Fargo, shows a hotel worker tossing piles of bed sheets into the bubbling hot tub and stirring them around with a broomstick as stunned guests looked on from nearby pool chairs.

“At first, I thought maybe the hot tub was broken and they were trying to soak up the water,” said guest Alex Kenmille, who recorded the footage. “But then he started adding more sheets, and I was like, what is going on? That’s disgusting. Are you kidding? Are we sleeping on those sheets?”

After confronting hotel staff, guests were told the hot tub was being used to remove small stains from linens — not as a replacement for a washing machine.

“The sheets are put into the hot tub, and it gets out tiny little stains,” one worker explained during a recorded phone call. “Then the hot tub is drained and heavily cleaned by a deep cleaner.”

Hotel management later claimed the “nontraditional” cleaning method is only used as a last resort when the pool area is closed, admitting the employee was reprimanded for doing it in front of guests. They also said they were checking with city health officials to determine whether the practice was allowed — though most experts would likely say it’s anything but safe.

Despite being chlorinated, hot tubs are far from sanitary. Health officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warn that they can harbor harmful bacteria and viruses responsible for conditions such as Legionnaires’ disease, “hot tub rash,” and other respiratory infections.

“Just sitting in a hot tub, with the heat, your skin will literally just come off — you’re like deshedding,” said another guest, Amy Vandal, who reported the incident alongside Kenmille to local health authorities.

The Fargo Cass Public Health Department has since launched an investigation into the hotel’s practices.

As for the guests who witnessed it all, the experience has likely changed the way they’ll look at hotel linens — and hot tubs — forever.
