A United States Postal Service employee tragically died over the weekend after becoming trapped in a conveyor belt system at a Michigan mail distribution center.
Nicholas John Acker, 36, of Trenton, New Jersey, was found deceased at the Detroit Network Distribution Center in Allen Park on Saturday, November 8. Authorities say he had been in the facility for several hours before his body was discovered.
Acker’s fiancée, Stephanie Jaszcz, expressed outrage at the Postal Service’s response to his death, calling it “gross” and “inhumane.” She criticized the statement that the center remains “fully operational,” saying, “The mail’s still moving? Gross. A man gone. A veteran. A husband. A human being. And all you can think of is mail keeps moving?”
The couple had recently gotten engaged just 10 days before the accident. Acker was also a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and his fiancée said she is frustrated the Postal Service did not acknowledge his service.
Allen Park Police have said the death does not appear to be suspicious. Investigators are continuing to look into how Acker became trapped in the conveyor system.
Acker is survived by his parents, Gary and Pat Acker, and his brother, Gary Acker. His funeral service is scheduled for Friday, November 14.
The Postal Service has expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. The NDC is fully operational at this time.”
