The fire broke out around 9 p.m. local time at a factory producing agrochemical products in the town of Carlos Spegazzini, near the Argentine capital, and just meters from the Cañuelas-Ezeiza motorway.
Local reports say at least 20 people suffered injuries, mostly from smoke inhalation, with one man hospitalized after experiencing a heart attack. The blaze spread across multiple floors of the building, forcing emergency responders to work tirelessly to contain it. Victims were taken to Eurnekian Hospital and Monte Grande Clinic for treatment.
Firefighters faced additional challenges due to the proximity of the Albanesi power station, which generates hydrocarbon energy. Authorities confirmed the station was secured, preventing what could have been a “monumental disaster.”
Even six hours after the explosion, crews were still battling the inferno. Fabian Garcia, provincial director of civil defense, described the situation as “very complicated,” emphasizing the urgency of stopping the fire from spreading further. He added, “The conditions aren’t bad, but it is a highly charged fire.”
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage.
