In a shocking and almost unbelievable turn of events, a 65-year-old woman in Thailand woke up alive inside a coffin on her way to a cremation.
The woman, who had been bedridden for two years, was being transported by her brother to the Wat Rat Prakhong Tham Buddhist temple in Nonthaburi province on Sunday, Nov. 23, when the unbelievable happened. According to the Associated Press, the temple’s manager, Pairat Soodthoop, said the brother heard knocking coming from the coffin during the drive.
“When we opened the coffin, we saw her moving,” Pairat said. “She was opening her eyes slightly and knocking for quite some time.”
The woman’s brother explained that she had seemingly stopped breathing two days prior, and believing she had passed, he placed her in the coffin and drove 300 miles from Phitsanulok to a hospital in Bangkok. He told hospital staff she had wanted to donate her organs, but they declined because she didn’t have an official death certificate.

Unable to proceed, he then brought her to Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, which offers free cremations—but again, without the proper paperwork, the temple couldn’t perform the ceremony. It was during discussions about how to obtain the death certificate that knocking was heard from inside the coffin.
Everyone present was stunned to discover the woman alive. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, and the temple has pledged to cover her medical expenses, according to Pairat.
