Three young siblings tragically lost their lives after a devastating apartment fire tore through their Wisconsin home late Thursday night.
Just before 10:40 p.m. on Nov. 27, firefighters and police rushed to an apartment complex on 43rd Avenue in Kenosha following reports of a structure fire. When first responders arrived, flames were already consuming the building.
Two brothers, ages 10 and 9, were found inside and pronounced dead at the scene. Their 7-year-old sister was airlifted to a hospital but did not survive her injuries. The three children were identified as Connor, Rylee, and Alena Kannin.
Their father, who desperately tried to save them, survived and is now being treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital.
Surveillance video obtained by TMJ4 News showed residents running for safety as thick smoke quickly filled the complex. Neighbor Latoya Cook recalled the terrifying moments, saying, “I instantly smelled it, and then you could see the smoke in the air. It was very thick, and it was bad.”
A GoFundMe created for the family describes the siblings as “the most amazing kids” who “had so much to give to this world.” The organizer praised their father as someone who “did everything he could for them” and called the tragedy “a parent’s worst nightmare.”
The fundraiser, which aims to help cover funeral costs and support the grieving father, has already raised nearly $11,000 of its $16,000 goal.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the deadly fire. Kenosha Police are urging anyone with information to contact Detective Marty Howard at 262-605-5284 or Crime Stoppers at 262-656-7333.
