A terrifying moment unfolded Monday in Miami, Florida when a pickup truck suddenly lost control and plunged into the water of the Miami River — but thanks to two brave bystanders, the two women trapped inside managed to escape alive.

Surveillance video released by local news shows the truck barreling through a marina fence, crashing into a tree and a boat at a dock near Northwest 18th Terrace and 24th Court, then plunging straight into the river. Witnesses initially thought the noise was an explosion before realizing a vehicle had gone into the water.

Boat captain Mauricio Florez, who saw the crash, said he heard a loud blast and rushed over — what he saw was chaotic: a sinking truck, a cloud of airbags, and two women inside screaming for help. Two good Samaritans didn’t hesitate. One, identified as Rafael Valdez, dove into the water, broke through the driver’s‑side window, and began pulling the women to safety as the truck filled with water and started to sink. They cut away seatbelts and deployed airbags, which were trapping the passengers as the vehicle submerged.

Both women, said to be employees of the city of Miami’s waste‑management department, managed to get out of the truck and reach safety. They reportedly sustained no injuries. Florez described the rescue as a “race against time,” and credited Valdez and the other rescuer with saving their lives.

The truck, which authorities say belongs to Miami’s waste‑management fleet, sank completely after the women were out. Nearby boats and a dock were damaged during the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation — police and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine why the driver lost control and careened off the road into the river.
