A Virginia nurse accused of causing serious injuries to multiple infants in a neonatal intensive care unit now faces more criminal charges and has had her nursing license suspended.

Erin Elizabeth Anne Strotman, 26, was first charged in January with felony abuse and malicious wounding after several babies at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond were found with unexplained fractures.

According to prosecutors, Strotman was initially charged in connection with a 5-month-old boy whose bones were broken in November 2024. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Strotman lifting the infant by his legs and bending them until his feet reached his head.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities filed 20 child abuse-related charges against Strotman, alleging that nine infants in total were injured under her care. Hospital officials launched an internal investigation in November 2024 after three babies were found with “unexplainable fractures.” The cases eerily mirrored incidents from 2023, when four newborns also suffered fractures.

Despite being placed on paid administrative leave in 2023 following those earlier incidents, Strotman returned to work later that year. Hospital policy requires suspected child abuse to be reported within 24 hours, but state health officials revealed that the 2023 cases were not reported for weeks.

Investigators also found lapses in hospital procedures, including incomplete tracking of staff interactions with patients and lab results.

As the criminal case progressed, the Virginia Board of Nursing suspended Strotman’s license, citing a “substantial danger to public health and safety.” State records show she was first licensed in May 2019 and had been working at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital since then. Her license was officially suspended in May 2025.
