A 73-year-old woman from Michigan is on the run after allegedly scamming nearly $30 million from banks and financial institutions in California, and the FBI says she may now be hiding out in Dubai.
Mary Carole McDonnell is wanted for her role in a fraud scheme that authorities say took place in Los Angeles and Orange Counties between July 2017 and May 2018. According to the FBI, she claimed to be an heiress to the McDonnell Aircraft fortune and said she had access to an $80 million secret trust.
The agency alleges that McDonnell knowingly took part in a scheme to defraud Banc of California, fraudulently obtaining about $14.7 million that she was never entitled to. She also allegedly used the same tactics to swindle over $15 million from other financial institutions.
McDonnell is described as a blonde woman, 5’7” tall, weighing 145 pounds, with a scar on her right knee.
Before these allegations, McDonnell served as the CEO of Bellum Entertainment, a now-defunct Burbank production company behind shows like I Married a Murderer and It Takes a Killer. The company was previously investigated by the California Labor Commission for allegedly failing to pay dozens of former employees.
A federal arrest warrant was issued for McDonnell on December 12, 2018, in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, California, charging her with bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Authorities urge anyone with information on her whereabouts to contact FBI field offices, the nearest American embassy or consulate, or submit an anonymous tip on the FBI’s website.
