A North Carolina man accused of brutally attacking an elderly couple during a New Year’s Eve home invasion made his first court appearance Friday in Johnston County, as disturbing new details about the alleged assault were revealed.
Thomas Wright is charged in connection with a violent break-in at a home on Devils Racetrack Road in Four Oaks. Prosecutors say the attack happened late on New Year’s Eve and appeared to be completely random.
During the hearing, authorities said Wright allegedly assaulted 81-year-old James Rhoades and his 74-year-old wife, Teresa. James was recently released from the intensive care unit, while Teresa remains hospitalized with a broken eye socket, a concussion, and additional injuries.
According to prosecutors, James was alerted to the danger after hearing his dogs barking outside the home. When he went to investigate, he allegedly saw Wright attempting to force his way through the screen door. Wright then kicked the door in and entered the home.
James followed him inside and witnessed Wright attacking Teresa, authorities said. Prosecutors told the court that Wright then ransacked the house before turning on James and assaulting him as well.
After fleeing the Rhoades’ home, Wright allegedly entered a nearby residence, where he encountered an elderly woman. Authorities said he spoke with her briefly before leaving without harming her.
Deputies arrived in the area shortly afterward, prompting Wright to flee on foot. He was captured after a short chase.
Investigators described the attacks as random and unprovoked.
Wright now faces multiple felony charges, including assault and breaking and entering. He is being held in custody without bond and has requested a court-appointed attorney.
His next court appearance is scheduled for later this month as the investigation continues.
