A sightseeing trip to one of Thailand’s most popular natural attractions ended in tragedy after a young tourist slipped and fell to his death while taking photos at a waterfall, according to local authorities.

Police say the fatal accident happened at Na Muang 2 waterfall on the island of Koh Samui, a well-known destination for visitors seeking scenic views and jungle hikes. The victim has been identified as Alexis Vergos, a 22-year-old French national and amateur soccer player who was traveling in Thailand with his girlfriend.

According to local police Major Chayut Tulachotikul, Vergos was taking photographs near the waterfall when he lost his footing.

“He was taking photos at the waterfall when he slipped, fell into the water, and struck rocks, dying at the scene,” the officer said.

Investigators believe Vergos climbed onto a rock to pose for photos with his girlfriend. After the couple finished taking pictures, Vergos reportedly stepped backward, slipped, and plunged down the side of the waterfall. Authorities said he fell onto rocks below, suffering fatal injuries.

Vergos’ girlfriend told police she was standing with him moments before the fall. Thai news outlets reported that she also slipped during the incident but managed to survive by grabbing onto a nearby branch.

Rescue workers, local officials, and police launched a recovery operation shortly after the fall. Due to the steep terrain and difficult access, the operation took approximately three hours. Vergos’ body was eventually located on the second tier of the waterfall.

Officials have not indicated that foul play was involved, describing the incident as a tragic accident. The death has renewed warnings from local authorities urging tourists to use extreme caution when taking photos near cliffs, waterfalls, and other hazardous natural areas.

Na Muang 2 waterfall is a popular stop for visitors to Koh Samui, but officials note that the rocks can be slippery, especially during humid or wet conditions, making the area particularly dangerous for climbing or stepping backward near the edge.
