A terrifying scene unfolded at a busy subway station in China after a man was suddenly engulfed in flames when a power bank in his pocket exploded.

The incident happened Monday, Jan. 5, as the man was traveling on Metro Line 15 at Shanghai West Railway Station, according to reports from the Associated Press, news.com.au, and City News Service.

Footage shared by the Associated Press shows sparks shooting out of the man’s jacket moments before the device ignited. In the shocking video, the commuter can be seen running down an escalator while his clothing is on fire, as stunned passengers scatter and thick smoke fills the station.

After the flames were extinguished, the man was seen holding his jacket away from his body, clearly shaken by the sudden explosion.

Station workers quickly rushed in and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, City News Service reported. Authorities later confirmed that no serious injuries were reported.

“We were stunned to see the man running away with flames on his jacket,” a witness told the Associated Press and news.com.au. “People started screaming, and we immediately alerted station staff. Everyone moved back while he ran toward the escalator. Thankfully, he was safe, and the fire was put out quickly.”

Officials said the power bank had been purchased just last month and carried China’s mandatory 3C safety certification. Investigators also noted that the device was not being used at the time of the explosion.

Fire officials believe the incident may have been caused by an internal short circuit, a manufacturing defect, or accumulated wear — all of which can trigger fires even when power banks are idle.

The Shanghai Municipal Police have been contacted for comment as the investigation continues.
