A terrifying moment at a popular California ski resort was caught on video, showing a 12-year-old girl clinging to a chairlift with her legs dangling in midair before she suddenly fell to the ground below.

The shocking incident happened Saturday, Jan. 31, at Mammoth Mountain, where the young snowboarder was riding a chairlift without being properly secured. In the video, the girl can be seen desperately holding on as onlookers watch from below.

Resort staff quickly sprang into action, racing to position padding and a safety net beneath the chairlift in an effort to break her fall. Despite their efforts, the girl missed most of the net and slammed hard onto the snowy ground.

The video was first shared on Facebook by a bystander, who used the frightening scene to highlight the importance of lowering the safety bar. “I wasn’t going to post this,” the caption read, “but I know so many people who argue with me about putting the bar down. It’s mandatory in Europe, and it should be here.”

Additional footage shows skiers and resort workers rushing to the girl’s side moments after the fall as they worked to help her.

In a comment on the post, the girl’s mother later reassured viewers that her daughter did not suffer any major injuries — a relief many online called nothing short of miraculous given the height of the fall.
