An Olympian has pulled back the curtain on what really goes on inside the Olympic Village, sharing eye-opening stories that suggest life off the field can be just as intense as the competition itself — including one infamous tale involving a “whirlpool orgy.”

The 2026 Winter Olympics are set to kick off this weekend, running from February 6 to 22 across Lombardy and northeastern Italy. Roughly 3,000 elite athletes from more than 90 countries are expected to descend on the region, many of them staying together in the Olympic Village.

For years, former Olympians have hinted that the Village has a reputation for being more than just a place to sleep between events. When athletes aren’t training or competing, hookups are hardly uncommon. Former U.S. soccer star Hope Solo once said the Village can be a major distraction for competitors who lack discipline, famously referencing a short phrase athletes use to signal romantic interest.

Still, one of the most talked-about stories happened back in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Speaking to ESPN, a skier recalled a late-night gathering that escalated into what they described as a “whirlpool orgy,” involving athletes from several countries, including Germany, Canada, and Australia.

“It started as a late-night whirlpool party,” the skier said. “Then it turned into a whirlpool orgy.”

Not every Olympian buys into the Village party scene. Some athletes choose to abstain entirely until their events are over, believing it helps them stay mentally and physically focused. Solo herself previously described the environment as a “huge distraction” for those who don’t manage it carefully.

Others, however, have been far more candid about indulging. U.S. javelin thrower Breaux Greer, who competed at the 2000 Sydney Games, once admitted that despite not winning a medal, he made the most of his Olympic experience by frequently hooking up with fellow athletes.

Athletes are also famously supplied with large quantities of condoms during the Games, a practice that has become a symbol of the Village’s anything-can-happen reputation.

Former alpine skier Carrie Sheinberg, who competed in the 1994 Winter Games, summed up the atmosphere by describing the Olympic Village as a “magical, fairy-tale place.”

“You could win a gold medal and you could sleep with a really hot guy,” she once said. “Maybe it’s because you’ll never see each other again. Olympians are adventurers. They’re always looking for the next challenge — even outside their sport.”
