An ordinary afternoon at a German scrapyard turned tragic when an 82-year-old man was fatally crushed inside a vehicle that was being processed for scrap.
The deadly accident happened just before 3:30 p.m. on February 25 in the Obersendling district of Munich, according to a statement from the Munich Police Department.
Authorities said a 60-year-old worker was operating an excavator equipped with a grab arm used to dismantle vehicles. While crushing the roof of a car and flipping it over, the operator had no idea someone was inside.
A witness suddenly spotted what police described as a lifeless person inside the vehicle.
Investigators believe the elderly man had entered the car unnoticed before the machinery crushed the roof. He suffered fatal injuries in the process.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, paramedics and police, rushed to the scene. Firefighters had to use specialized equipment to recover the man’s body from the wreckage.
Police confirmed the 82-year-old victim lived in Munich. A spokesperson later told the BBC that the car did not belong to him. It is believed he may have been at the junkyard to collect scrap metal.
The Munich traffic police are now investigating how the man ended up inside the vehicle and how the fatal oversight occurred.
