An American cruise passenger has reportedly died while traveling aboard a luxury ship sailing through South America.
According to local reports, the incident occurred on the Oceania Marina cruise ship during a voyage along the Argentine coast.
The ship arrived early at the port of Puerto Madryn, Argentina, on March 3. Port officials said the vessel, which was carrying 1,179 passengers and 743 crew members, docked a day ahead of schedule due to rough weather conditions.
While the ship was in port, an elderly American passenger reportedly died on board, according to Argentine news outlets Radio 3 and Canal 12, citing the Argentine Naval Prefecture.
Officials believe the man likely suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, though authorities say the cause of death is still based on preliminary findings.
Reports say the passenger had originally planned to disembark later in the voyage in the Falkland Islands. However, his health reportedly deteriorated rapidly while the ship was at sea, prompting the vessel to bring him to Puerto Madryn.
Once the ship arrived, the onboard medical team worked with local maritime and health officials to follow emergency procedures and remove the body from the vessel.
Arrangements are now reportedly being made to return the deceased passenger to the United States.
A spokesperson for Oceania Cruises declined to comment on the situation, citing respect for the privacy of the passenger’s family.
Despite the tragic incident, the cruise itinerary was not interrupted. The Oceania Marina continued sailing along the Argentine coastline and is scheduled to stop next in Buenos Aires.
The ship is currently on a 20-day one-way journey from San Antonio, Chile, to Buenos Aires. The voyage began on Feb. 15 and is expected to conclude on March 7.
According to Oceania Cruises, the Marina is scheduled to depart again the same day for a new 10-day cruise from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro.
The death follows another cruise-related incident earlier this year. In January, a 27-year-old passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas was found unresponsive while the ship was docked in Singapore.
Authorities said the man was pronounced dead on board by the ship’s doctor, and no foul play was suspected.
