A powerful explosion ripped through a nightclub in Peru early Saturday morning, leaving dozens of people injured and sending shockwaves through a region already struggling with rising violence.
Authorities say at least 33 people were hurt when a blast tore through the Dali nightclub in the coastal city of Trujillo during the early morning hours. Several of the victims are reportedly in serious condition.
Local officials confirmed that minors were among those injured. The victims include a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds who were caught in the chaos.
Health officials said some of the wounded suffered severe injuries, including shrapnel wounds and amputations, and several people are now undergoing emergency surgery.
Gerardo Florián Gómez, executive director of the Trujillo Health Network, told reporters that at least five of the victims remain in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet confirmed who carried out the attack, and investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the explosion.
The bombing happened in Trujillo, a major city along Peru’s northern coast that has been dealing with an increase in crime and violence in recent years.
The region of La Libertad, where Trujillo is located, has been heavily impacted by organized crime, including extortion rings and illegal mining operations tied to criminal groups.
The attack also comes just weeks after another explosion rocked the same city. That earlier blast damaged around 25 homes but did not cause any injuries.
According to official figures, the La Libertad region recorded 286 explosions in 2025 alone, with nearly half of them happening in Trujillo.
Authorities say the growing presence of organized criminal networks has fueled a surge in violence across the area.
The investigation into the nightclub explosion remains ongoing as officials search for those responsible.
