A tragic hiking accident has left one young woman dead and her boyfriend fighting for his life after a devastating fall on a popular mountain trail.
The couple, both just 18 years old, were climbing Mount Beerwah on Australia’s Sunshine Coast on the morning of March 15 when things suddenly went horribly wrong.
According to reports, the pair fell from a significant height while hiking with a group. The young woman plunged nearly 200 feet, while her boyfriend fell even farther — around 300 feet.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but the woman suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the site of the fall.
Her boyfriend, who was identified as her partner, was airlifted to a nearby hospital with critical head injuries. He remains in serious condition.
Authorities say the couple had been hiking with a group of six people but had split into smaller groups along the trail before the accident happened. In a heartbreaking detail, the woman’s sister was reportedly present and witnessed the fall.
Rescue teams were able to safely bring the remaining hikers down from the mountain.
Officials believe weather conditions may have played a role. Light rain earlier in the day had made the terrain dangerously slippery, increasing the risk for climbers.
“This is an extraordinarily sad and tragic accident,” one official said, noting the group had simply been out enjoying the outdoors.

The incident has also raised concerns about safety on the mountain, which had recently been closed due to poor weather conditions. The closure has now been extended as officials warn that heavy rainfall can increase the risk of falling rocks and unstable terrain.
