A bizarre standoff is unfolding inside a Florida hospital, where one patient has allegedly refused to leave her room for months — even after doctors said she was well enough to go home.
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare has now taken the unusual step of suing the woman, claiming she has remained in Room 373 since being officially discharged back in October. According to the lawsuit, hospital staff determined she no longer needed acute care and issued a formal discharge order on October 6.
But she never left.
Hospital officials say they’ve made repeated attempts to help coordinate her departure, including working with family members and offering transportation so she could obtain necessary identification. None of it worked.
Now, the hospital is asking a judge to step in — and even authorize the county sheriff’s office to remove her if needed.
“Defendant’s continued occupancy prevents use of the bed for patients needing acute care,” the hospital stated in court filings, arguing that her extended stay is tying up critical resources that could be used for other patients.
The situation raises a lot of unanswered questions. The lawsuit does not explain what the woman was originally treated for, how much her hospital bill may be, or how she managed to remain in the room for more than five months after being discharged.
Even more unusual — she appears to be representing herself in court, and attempts to reach her have gone nowhere. Phone numbers linked to her are disconnected, and calls placed directly to her hospital room have not been answered.
Hospital representatives have declined to comment publicly, citing the ongoing legal case.
An online hearing is scheduled for later this month, where a judge could decide whether to force her removal.
Under federal law, hospitals are required to treat and stabilize patients regardless of their ability to pay. But once a patient is medically cleared, they can be discharged — as long as they’re given a plan for follow-up care.
