A routine town hall meeting turned into a heartbreaking scene in Idaho after a newly elected mayor suddenly collapsed and died in front of colleagues and community members.

Rick Hogaboam, 47, the recently sworn-in mayor of Nampa, was speaking at a regional meeting in Eagle on Wednesday evening when he collapsed mid-speech.

Emergency help came fast. Eagle Mayor Brad Pike, a former firefighter, immediately began CPR while police, firefighters, and medics rushed in to assist. Despite their efforts, Hogaboam was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Thursday, the Ada County coroner confirmed the cause of death as cardiac tamponade—a rare and life-threatening condition.

The complication occurs when fluid or blood builds up around the heart, putting pressure on it and preventing it from pumping properly. It’s considered extremely rare, affecting only a small number of people, and can quickly become fatal without immediate treatment.

Hogaboam, a husband and father of five, had just stepped into his role as mayor after winning the election in November. He rose quickly through local leadership, serving as a city councilman before becoming mayor in less than a decade.

His sudden passing has left the community stunned.

At a city council meeting the following day, colleagues honored him by placing flowers at his empty seat—a quiet but powerful tribute.

“Our hearts are broken,” Councilwoman Debbie Skaug said. “We wanted to serve with a great man.”

Others remembered his energy, dedication, and the way he made the most of every moment.

“He had a gift of turning 24 hours into a month,” one council member said. “The best way to honor him is to show kindness and appreciate the time we have.”

City leaders now have 90 days to appoint a new mayor, who will serve until the next election in 2027. In the meantime, the focus remains on grieving a loss that came far too soon.

Hogaboam’s memorial service is scheduled for March 31 at the Ford Idaho Center, where family, friends, and community members are expected to gather and remember a leader whose time in office was tragically cut short.
