A dream cruise turned tragic after a passenger died aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas during a 12-day sailing from Sydney to New Zealand.
Police were alerted to the unexplained death at about 1:40 a.m. on Wednesday, setting off an urgent investigation into what happened on board the massive cruise ship. Authorities are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death.
At the time of the incident, Anthem of the Seas was on its way to Waitangi in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. The vessel had departed Sydney on March 22, according to CruiseMapper, and arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday.
The ship was carrying more than 4,000 passengers along with around 1,300 crew members when the tragedy unfolded. That meant thousands of people were on board as officials began dealing with the shocking situation in the middle of the voyage.
So far, few details have been released about the passenger or the events leading up to the death. Investigators have described it as unexplained, and police are now working to determine exactly what took place.
Royal Caribbean, one of the world’s best-known cruise operators, runs trips to destinations including the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand. Anthem of the Seas is one of the company’s massive Quantum Class ships, featuring 16 decks and 2,090 staterooms.
