A terrifying train derailment in Russia has left dozens injured after multiple cars suddenly jumped the tracks—turning a routine journey into chaos in seconds.

The passenger train, carrying more than 400 people, derailed Friday morning in the Ulyanovsk region, about 560 miles east of Moscow. Officials say seven train cars came off the tracks, triggering an immediate emergency response as first responders rushed to the scene.

In total, 412 passengers were onboard at the time of the accident.

At least 59 people were injured, including four children. Authorities say 55 adults sought medical treatment, with 17 needing to be hospitalized. Several passengers suffered fractures, highlighting just how violent the derailment was.

The four injured children were also taken to the hospital, though officials say their conditions are stable.

Among those on the train was a group of young taekwondo athletes, ages 12 to 14, who were traveling to a competition. Fortunately, they escaped with only minor injuries like scrapes and bruises.

Investigators are now zeroing in on what caused the frightening incident—and early signs point to a troubling possibility.

Russia’s top investigative body says poor track conditions may be to blame, raising serious questions about safety and maintenance on the railway line.

A full multi-agency investigation is now underway as officials work to determine exactly what went wrong—and whether the crash could have been prevented.
