A shocking attack on a New York City subway platform is raising fresh concerns about the safety of transit workers after a conductor was violently beaten by a passenger he had just ordered off a train.

The disturbing incident unfolded Friday night around 10:15 p.m. at the 177th Street–Parkchester station in the Bronx—and it was all caught on video.

According to police, the 58-year-old MTA conductor had just announced the final stop on a 6 train and instructed passengers to exit. That’s when things took a sudden and ugly turn.

Footage shows the suspect spitting directly at the conductor before the situation spiraled out of control.

Moments later, the conductor stepped off the train holding what appeared to be a piece of wood, attempting to defend himself as tensions escalated. But the suspect dodged the swings, removed his jacket, and then charged.

What followed was brutal.

The attacker tackled the conductor to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the head and face as stunned bystanders looked on. Even as others rushed in to help, the suspect managed to land several more blows—including a final kick to the conductor’s face before fleeing the scene.

The conductor was left badly injured, suffering deep cuts to his head and face along with severe swelling around one eye. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Police say the suspect ran off after the attack and is still being sought. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying the man.

The incident has sparked outrage among fellow transit workers, who say violence on the job has become far too common.

One neighbor of the conductor, who also works for the MTA, said he wasn’t shocked by what happened.

“People have no respect for transit workers,” he said. “They deal with this kind of thing all the time.”

The injured conductor, described as someone who keeps to himself and was nearing retirement, has not publicly commented beyond saying he had “no comment” when reached.

Transit officials are also speaking out.

“Transit employees should always safely return home in the same condition as they came to work,” said NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow. “Anything less is unacceptable.”

As the search for the suspect continues, the violent scene is once again putting a spotlight on the growing risks faced by the people who keep the city moving every day.
