LSU’s Lady Tigers were apparently uninterested in receiving a pep talk from First Lady Jill Biden before their NCAA championship game against Iowa.
Star forward Angel Reese revealed on I Am Athlete’s “Paper Route” show on Tuesday that the team declined to meet with the First Lady before the game.
She stated that the team did not speak with her directly, and that they had refused her visit to their locker room.
Reese explained that the team was dissatisfied with President Joe Biden’s pre-tournament bracket, where he had LSU losing to Michigan in the second round and Villanova winning the national championship.
Reese also criticized the First Lady’s invitation to the White House, which included Iowa, despite the longstanding tradition of only national champions being invited.
Reese called the invitation a “joke” and stated that the Lady Tigers would not be interested in visiting the White House. Biden’s spokesperson, Vanessa Valdivia, backtracked on the matter, explaining that the First Lady’s comments were intended to applaud all women athletes.
Reese has been in the middle of controversy after some took exception to her taunting Iowa star Caitln Clark at the end of LSU’s triumph.
Despite the team’s victory, Reese believes that they would not have been invited to the White House if they had lost to the Hawkeyes. Reese told the outlet that she is unsure if she will visit the White House, saying, “We’re gonna see. I don’t know.”
The Lady Tigers will celebrate their national championship win with a parade in Baton Rouge on Wednesday.
The team’s decision to decline the First Lady’s visit is sure to generate debate among fans and commentators, and it remains to be seen if the team’s decision will have any impact on their relationship with the Biden administration.
