Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting at a Sweet 16 party in Dadeville, Alabama, that claimed the lives of four people and injured 32 others.
According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Jeremy Burkett, Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, both of Tuskeegee, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with four counts of reckless murder. They will be charged as adults, according to District Attorney Mike Segrest.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Burkett stated that the state is requesting that the teenagers be held without bond.
Under Alabama law, a bond hearing must be held for the teens by Friday. Burkett also stated that additional charges against the teens are forthcoming.
Segrest emphasized that justice must be served for all of the victims, not just those who lost their lives.
He said he plans to recall grand jurors to seek an indictment before the next scheduled meeting in September, and that he wants to ensure that the facts are established before taking further action.
The shooting took place at a private event celebrating a Sweet 16 birthday party in a rural community center.
The suspects allegedly opened fire after a fight broke out between two groups of people at the party. Four people were killed, including a mother of four and two teenagers. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition.
Burkett condemned the senseless violence, stating, “Make no mistake, this is Alabama. If you pull out a gun and you start shooting people, we’re going to put you in jail.” He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and praised the quick response of law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene within minutes of the shooting.
The arrests of the two teenagers have brought some measure of closure to the community, but many residents are still reeling from the tragedy. Local leaders and law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, and they have promised to work tirelessly to bring all those responsible to justice.
