The upcoming coronation of King Charles III has reignited anti-monarchist sentiment in Britain. The country’s main anti-monarchist movement, Republic, plans to stage its largest ever protest during the ceremony, with over 1,000 people expected to attend.

The group, which was founded in 1983, campaigns for an elected head of state and believes that Charles’ ascension to the throne presents the best opportunity to end the monarchy.

Republic’s founder, Graham Smith, views the coronation as the perfect opportunity to highlight what he perceives as an outdated institution that has no place in a 21st-century democracy, particularly in light of the current economic struggles facing many Britons.

When the newly crowned king passes through the procession route, Republic plans to boo loudly and chant “not my king.”

Recent polls suggest that support for the monarchy is waning, with YouGov reporting that in 2012, 73% of the public believed the monarchy was good for Britain, whereas that figure has since dropped to 53%.

Smith believes that the British public’s respect for Queen Elizabeth II has been an obstacle to the republican cause and that Charles has not inherited the same level of deference, respect, and sycophancy as his mother.

Despite declining support, protests against the monarchy are relatively small, and polls indicate that the majority of Britons still want a royal family. However, surveys also suggest that younger generations are less interested in the institution than older generations. The monarchy’s finances have come under scrutiny in recent years, with the Guardian reporting that King Charles III’s personal wealth is almost £2 billion ($2.5 billion).

Although the majority of British newspapers still support the royal family, a lack of consensus about what the monarchy would be replaced with, coupled with a general decline in support for British political institutions, makes making radical changes to the country’s political system difficult.

Nevertheless, Republic’s Smith predicts that support for the royal family will continue to decline, and a future government will eventually hold a referendum on the issue. With two of the four nations that make up the United Kingdom led by republicans, Scotland’s new leader, Humza Yousaf, wanting to end the monarchy, and Wales’s leader Mark Drakeford also calling for a republic, the monarchy’s future remains uncertain.

  1. His Royal Buffonery will be on display for all to see. His ascension to the throne unfortunately vacated by HRH QEII will spell doom for the monarchy as he brings little credibility & little respect.

His woke buffoonery showcases his shameless eco-green washing of monarchy traditions. He should have advocated for his 1st born.
Instead the House of Windsor & the Royal family will have to endure his endless machinations on the world stage desperately trying to fill the shoes of his glorious & magnificent mother.

The coronation he inherited will be watched by few & exclaimed by none. England needs new, young blood, not and old geezer, advocate now!
