Vietnam has imposed a ban on the movie “Barbie” from domestic distribution due to a scene that showcases a map of the disputed South China Sea.
The film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was scheduled to be released in Vietnamese cinemas on July 21. This decision comes as Vietnam seeks to avoid any portrayal of China’s controversial nine-dash line, which it considers an “illegal image.” It is not the first time Vietnam has taken such action, as a similar ban was placed on the movie “Uncharted” in 2022 for the same reason.
The Controversial Scene:
According to VnExpress news website, the movie “Barbie” includes a scene that displays China’s disputed nine-dash line on a map. The nine-dash line is a cartographic claim used by China to assert its territorial control over more than 80% of the South China Sea. However, neighboring countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan, have conflicting territorial claims in the region.
Vietnam’s Ban on “Barbie”:
Vi Kien Thanh, the head of Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s cinema department, stated that the inclusion of the nine-dash line in the movie constitutes an “illegal image.” Consequently, Vietnam has decided to ban the domestic distribution of “Barbie.” This action reflects Vietnam’s commitment to maintaining a consistent stance against any depiction of the disputed maritime area that supports China’s territorial claims.
Consistency in Vietnam’s Stance:
This is not the first instance of Vietnam imposing a ban on a movie due to its portrayal of the South China Sea dispute. In 2022, the movie “Uncharted” faced a similar ban for featuring content related to the contested territory. Vietnam’s repeated actions highlight its firm position in opposing any attempt to legitimize China’s claim over the South China Sea through media or entertainment.
The South China Sea Dispute:
The South China Sea is a strategically significant region rich in natural resources, and its waters are crucial for international trade. China’s nine-dash line claim, based on a 1947 map, has been widely contested by Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Taiwan. These countries assert their own territorial rights in the area and have engaged in disputes with China over the validity of their claims.
Implications and Regional Tensions:
Vietnam’s ban on “Barbie” underscores the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea and the sensitivity surrounding territorial disputes. The ban serves as a reflection of Vietnam’s determination to protect its national interests and assert its position in the face of China’s expansive claims. It also highlights the wider challenge of navigating territorial conflicts in the region and the potential impact on cultural exchanges and entertainment industries.

Sometimes it seems some movie makers are clueless about other aspects of life.
Why show any maps at all of an area contested by a few countries. Either way you show the map, you are going to have somebody pissed at you.
Anyways…did we really needed a “Barbie movie”?
Disgusting Hollyweird! Typical they think they can do anything they like with researching to ensure information is correct! You would think they would learn from the US issues but they are learning on a world level! A Barbie movie? Hollywood has lost all sense of intellect, common sense, and decent actors. Time to have all conservativesmoderates, and libertarians to start standing up and banning anything and everything that the extreme left wants to do, say, or advocates for. This country is NOT a cesspool free for all do what you want when you want how you want no matter how disgusting, evil, depraved, criminal, human morally appalling, free drugs, needles, and crackpipes, and abortions, all at taxpayers expenses, and turning everyplace into a unsafe homeless ghetto without any retribution or consequences! A good portion of this country is derailed, mentally toxic, has no clue of right and wrong, integrity, ethics, morals, or common sense. The left is just enabling the worst behavior, allowing socialism, communism, marxism, and anything and everything enter this country from Mexico! BTW, we now have prople entering from the Communist Chinese Army. We have approximately 5k-10k in the country. Well done Biden Dumb F!
Abortions are much cheaper than lifetime welfare support for unwanted/defective children… otherwise, I agree,,,
Different maps will prolly be depicted in movies going to different areas… just like different languages and politics are used…
