Harvard President Claudine Gay is embroiled in an academic controversy that is becoming more complex, with six new charges of plagiarism emerging to compound the growing number of allegations that have shaken the esteemed university. The ongoing dispute, which has drawn national attention, centers on allegations that Gay plagiarized extensively in her published writings.
The most recent accusations, which were first made public by The Washington Free Beacon, center on a particular allegation that Gay, in a 2001 piece, copied verbatim over half a page of content from another academic, David Canon, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin. Gay has been accused of plagiarism in close to 50 instances in total, which makes up about “half of Gay’s published works,” according to The Free Beacon.
In addition to casting doubt on Gay’s academic integrity, the incident has prompted requests for her resignation from Harvard students. Students are dissatisfied due to weeks of accusations about how she handled antisemitism on campus and growing charges of plagiarism.
Two opinion writers, Brooks Anderson and Joshua Kaplan, wrote an alternative opinion to a Harvard Crimson editorial that suggested Gay should stay in her role despite the plagiarism accusations. The piece was published on Sunday. They claimed that Gay has failed in every way, and that the presidency of Harvard is a difficult administrative position with heavy obligations. The authors urged Harvard Corporation to appoint a CEO capable of handling the difficulties more skillfully.
The accusation against Gay, as reported by The Free Beacon, lists several potential instances of plagiarism and highlights situations in which the accused woman is said to have taken ideas without giving due credit. Interestingly, in one instance, Gay quoted four sentences—without using quote marks and with only slight semantic adjustments—from Canon’s 1999 book, “Race, Redistricting, and Representation: The Unintended Consequences of Black Majority Districts.” But Canon downplayed the passages, saying, “This isn’t even close to an example of academic plagiarism.”
The Harvard Corporation’s December examination of Gay’s published publications allegedly omitted the most recent accusations. The complaint against Gay requests that an inquiry be conducted to ascertain whether any employees of Harvard neglected to disclose any seen or suspected instances of Claudine Gay’s research misconduct.
