A tragic accident at a Hudson Yards in construction site claimed the life of a worker Thursday morning after he fell about 60 feet into a massive excavation pit, according to the FDNY.
The man had been working on a newly poured foundation wall at the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project, located at 12th Avenue and West 30th Street, when the deadly fall occurred around 8:50 a.m.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes. “We encountered a construction worker at the bottom of the pit, 60 feet down,” Battalion Chief Anthony Romano said. Crews quickly realized the man was unresponsive and had no pulse.
Using a highpoint anchor system, firefighters lowered a stokes basket into the hole and lifted the victim out within minutes. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he could not be saved.
Officials said the victim worked for the New York Concrete Corporation, though his identity has not yet been released. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fatal fall.
“It was a foundation wall that was poured yesterday,” said FDNY EMS Division Chief Nicholas Aiello. “We do not know how or why he fell.”
The Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project, part of the effort to connect the Hudson River Tunnel to Penn Station, has paused work on its third phase while the incident is under investigation. The massive infrastructure project had been slated for completion next year.
In a statement, the Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and Related Companies expressed condolences to the worker’s family, saying, “Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
