A prominent Iowa judge is making headlines for all the wrong reasons after being arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and passing out behind the wheel on a major highway.

According to police and witnesses, State Judge Adria Kester, 55, was found slumped over in her pickup truck on U.S. Highway 30 in Boone on Tuesday night. Another driver noticed her vehicle drifting into oncoming traffic and called 911, the Des Moines Register reported.

Kester, who serves as chief judge of Iowa’s largest judicial district, reportedly crossed the highway median before a quick-thinking motorist climbed through her truck’s back window to bring it to a stop.

When officers arrived, they said Kester was unsteady on her feet and unable to walk without help. The arrest report noted she had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a cup containing a liquid that smelled strongly of alcohol inside her 2026 GMC Canyon Denali.

She was taken into custody around 4 a.m. Wednesday and charged with operating while intoxicated.

Kester has pleaded not guilty.

“Judge Kester recognizes the seriousness of the situation and is fully cooperating with law enforcement and the judicial process,” her attorney, Matt Lindholm, said in a statement. “She is committed to addressing this matter responsibly and in accordance with the law.”

  1. Not guilty seriously? Take responsibility like I’m sure she tells others. This country has a lack of accountability problem.
