A 31-year-old man is dead after a tragic industrial accident at a steel plant in Birmingham, Alabama — and authorities say he wasn’t even supposed to be there.
The incident occurred on Friday, November 7, just before 7 p.m., when officials were called to CMC Steel after workers discovered that someone had been seriously hurt, according to AL.com.
The victim was later identified as Robert Carson Chambliss, a Birmingham resident, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed. Chambliss was neither an employee nor a contractor at the plant and had entered the property without authorization. He suffered fatal blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at 10:49 p.m. by responding officers.
Further details about how the accident happened have not been released. Both the Birmingham Police Department and CMC Steel did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Workplace accidents remain a serious issue across the United States. In 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 5,283 fatal work-related injuries, slightly down from 5,486 in 2022. Construction remains the deadliest industry, with major risks including falls, being caught in or between hazards, electrocution, and being struck by objects. In 2009, nearly 17% of all fatal work-related injuries involved contact with objects or equipment.
