A United Airlines flight headed to Chicago was forced to make an emergency landing in Missouri on Sunday after a passenger claimed there was a bomb in his wife’s luggage, authorities and reports say.
United Flight 380, traveling from Dallas to Chicago, was diverted to St. Louis Lambert International Airport around 8:40 a.m., a United spokesperson confirmed. Sources told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the man allegedly reported a bomb in his wife’s bag.
The passenger was taken into custody, though it’s not yet clear if he has been charged.
All 119 passengers were evacuated safely and waited in the airport concourse after landing, according to airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. Bomb and arson teams spent more than two hours inspecting the Boeing 737-700, which was eventually cleared by law enforcement.
The flight took off again from St. Louis later that afternoon and arrived safely in Chicago.
This incident comes amid a string of recent in-flight bomb threats. On November 4, a United Airlines flight to Virginia’s Reagan Washington National Airport received a threat demanding $500,000 in cryptocurrency to prevent an alleged explosion, temporarily grounding flights. Later that same day, a Delta flight at LaGuardia Airport was evacuated following a bomb threat.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
