A tragic mass shooting in Newark, New Jersey left two people dead — including a 10-year-old boy — and three others injured on Saturday evening.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting unfolded around 7 p.m. on the 300 block of Chancellor Avenue. A 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were rushed to University Hospital, where both were pronounced dead.

Three more victims were wounded: an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man. Authorities say all three survived and are currently in stable condition.

Photos from the scene show Newark police surrounding the neighborhood as investigators marked numerous shell casings scattered across the street. The area, described by NJ.com as a quiet residential block with many single-family homes, was locked down for hours. Residents of a nearby apartment building on Leslie Street were not allowed back inside following the violence.

One neighbor told local reporters they heard “a lot of screaming” followed by more than six gunshots.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office has announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. The investigation is active, and no arrests had been made as of Sunday.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the deadly shooting “a dark and devastating day in Newark,” noting that it occurred just hours after a separate tragedy in the city involving a 2-year-old who died in a fall from a high-rise window.

“We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and family left behind in unspeakable pain and grief,” Baraka said in a statement. “We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide.”

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this trauma,” he added.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
