A tragic accident in northern India has claimed the lives of at least five people after a bus carrying pilgrims plunged into a gorge in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand. Several others were injured in the horrific crash.

The bus, carrying around 30 passengers, was returning from a visit to a temple along the Kunjapuri–Hindolakhal route in the Narendranagar area when it suddenly lost control on a steep, mountainous road. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle veered off the road and fell approximately 70 meters into a deep gorge.

Rescue teams were quickly mobilized after local authorities alerted the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Five SDRF teams rushed to the scene, pulling survivors from the ravine and transporting them to nearby hospitals. Some of the seriously injured were later referred to a higher-level trauma center for critical care.

Police confirmed that the victims came from various parts of India. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, but it remains unclear whether human error, mechanical failure, or hazardous road conditions led to the bus plunging into the gorge.

In response to the tragedy, officials are calling for a review of safety measures on hilly routes frequently used by tourists and pilgrims, highlighting the dangers posed by steep mountain roads.

This devastating incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by travelers on India’s winding and often treacherous roads.
