A six-story apartment building in Manhattan’s Upper West Side caught fire Tuesday morning, sending thick smoke and flames into the air. The fire broke out at 8:20 a.m., according to the New York City Fire Department, and quickly caused major damage to the 24-unit building.
FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods described the destruction as “heavy, heavy damage,” noting that the roof collapsed into the top floor and part of the parapet wall fell onto the street.
The fire was brought under control by 10:30 a.m., but dramatic photos from the scene show flames still shooting out of the building as smoke billowed into the sky.
Three people were injured, including a firefighter who suffered minor burns. Paramedics found two residents inside the building during the blaze, both with minor injuries.
The fire struck as temperatures were expected to dip below freezing Monday night, adding to the dangerous conditions for both residents and first responders.
FDNY Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
