A DoorDash driver has been permanently banned from the platform after shocking doorbell camera footage appeared to show her spraying a customer’s food with what the victim believes was pepper spray — causing his wife to fall violently ill moments after eating it.
The disturbing incident unfolded just after midnight Sunday at a home in Evansville, Indiana, when Mark and Mandy Cardin ordered Arby’s through DoorDash. Their doorbell camera captured the delivery driver, who had blue hair, snapping the usual confirmation photo before pulling an object from her pocket and spraying the bag of food. She then tucked the spray back into her jacket and casually walked away.
Unaware anything had happened, the couple brought their order inside and started eating. Within minutes, Mandy began gasping and choking.
“I noticed my wife had started eating and she started choking and gasping… after a couple bites she actually threw up,” Mark told WFIE.
Alarmed, Mark began examining the bag and immediately saw signs of tampering. After rushing his wife to the hospital, he checked his security footage and saw the driver had intentionally sprayed something on their order.
Mark shared screenshots and video on Facebook, asking the community to help identify the driver. When he tried contacting her through the app, he discovered she had already blocked him.
DoorDash quickly responded to the complaint and removed the driver from the platform. “We have zero tolerance for this type of appalling behavior,” a DoorDash spokesperson stated, adding that the company is cooperating with law enforcement.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office has launched a criminal investigation and is seeking charges. The driver could face a Level 6 felony for consumer product tampering, which could be upgraded to a Level 5 felony if the substance is found to have caused harm.
Mark fears the situation could have been far worse. “We assume it’s pepper spray, that’s more than likely what it is, but in this day and age it could’ve been anything. Rat poison, fentanyl… my wife could’ve been dead.”
The couple says they had never met the driver before and had even left a tip before the incident.
Mark is now urging everyone who uses delivery apps to protect themselves. “If you order food on any kind of delivery service, make sure you have a doorbell camera,” he warned. “This is making me second-guess ever ordering food from anywhere again.”
