A bizarre police chase unfolded on Interstate 26 in western North Carolina after a suspect managed to steal an officer’s vehicle and lead multiple agencies on a multi-county pursuit.

The incident began early Wednesday, Dec. 10, when Brevard police say an officer tried to detain 36-year-old Ramae Cynquan Foster. During the encounter, Foster allegedly struck the officer in the face, jumped into her unmarked police vehicle, and took off.

The injured officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital before being released.

Once the suspect fled, agencies across the region mobilized. The chase stretched roughly 14 miles northeast toward Mills River and involved Brevard Police, Fletcher Police, Hendersonville Police, Asheville Airport Police, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The pursuit came to an end near Exit 53 on I-26 when Henderson County sheriff’s deputies used a precision immobilization technique (PIT maneuver) to disable the stolen police vehicle. No injuries occurred during the PIT, though deputies reported that Foster resisted arrest before being taken into custody.

Photos shared on social media show the unmarked police car on the shoulder of the interstate, surrounded by law enforcement vehicles.

According to officials, all police equipment and weapons inside the stolen car were recovered and accounted for.

Foster now faces a long list of charges, including fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting a public officer, reckless driving to endanger, driving the wrong way, and running a stop light.

Brevard is located about 125 miles west of Charlotte.
