A holiday celebration on Nantucket took an unexpected and chaotic turn last weekend when a street brawl broke out during the island’s annual Christmas festivities.

The fight happened Saturday afternoon on Federal Street during the 51st Nantucket Christmas Stroll, a popular seasonal event that draws large crowds each year. The Nantucket Police Department confirmed the incident, which was captured on video and quickly spread online.

Hundreds of people were gathered in the area at the time, many of them waiting to see Santa Claus arrive as part of the festivities. Instead, they witnessed a heated confrontation spill into the middle of the street.

Video footage shows a group of men ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s arguing and shoving one another as bystanders looked on. The group eventually split into two clusters. In one, two older men appeared to shove each other repeatedly. In another, a younger man pushed someone else before a third person jumped on his back, sending him crashing to the ground.

What started as scattered scuffles quickly escalated into a full-on brawl, with several people throwing punches as the crowd watched.

One witness described the scene to KISS108 as surreal. “It was kind of like the Jets and the Sharks from West Side Story, only in Ralph Lauren and Burberry,” she said, adding that it felt like “20-somethings versus, like, 60-somethings.”

“It was crazy,” she added. “It was mayhem.”

Authorities say it is still unclear what sparked the fight. Nantucket police officers responded to the scene around 2 p.m., but no arrests have been reported.
