A 17-year-old girl tragically died after falling from a cliff while trying to take photos at Moffat Beach in Queensland, Australia.

Queensland Police confirmed the incident occurred on December 13, with emergency services called around 6:40 p.m. The teenager, who has not been publicly identified, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman who tried to help the girl before emergency services arrived sustained minor injuries, authorities said. Queensland police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that a group of teenage girls had climbed over a railing to get a better view of the sunset. As they were making their way back, the 17-year-old slipped and fell nearly 100 feet onto the rocks below.

Her friends and other witnesses immediately tried to administer first aid. “They’re young girls … doing nothing other than enjoying life,” Hocken said. “Unfortunately, one wrong footstep has caused her to fall.”

Queensland’s Fire and Rescue also urged caution for anyone visiting beaches and cliffs in the area. Ryan Dubyk reminded the public, “Especially this time of the year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place. Just stay back.”

Moffat Beach, located on the Sunshine Coast and less than a 90-minute drive from Brisbane, is a lesser-known destination. According to local guidance, the beach is not patrolled, and visitors should remain cautious of the waves and surrounding terrain.
