Chaos erupted at New York City’s JFK Airport early Tuesday morning when an on-duty Customs and Border Protection officer fired shots at a driver, leaving travelers terrified.

The incident took place near Terminal 8 around 4:48 a.m., according to ABC7. Fortunately, no one was injured, though one vehicle was struck by gunfire.

Port Authority police say the shooting appears to have stemmed from road rage after a minor traffic accident between two vehicles. Officers at the scene reported that the CBP officer claimed he was assaulted by the other driver following the crash and discharged his duty weapon during the altercation.

Details are still unclear as to why the officer fired, and the Port Authority is investigating the incident.

The shooting caused major traffic disruptions on the Van Wyck Expressway, with lanes reduced to just one heading into the airport while authorities responded.

Travelers at JFK were left shaken by the unexpected early-morning gunfire, highlighting a frightening moment at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
