Vince Zampella, the video game development icon best known for co-creating the Call of Duty franchise, has tragically passed away at the age of 55. Electronic Arts (EA), where Zampella had a major impact on the gaming world, confirmed his death on Monday, though the company did not disclose the cause of death.
NBC Los Angeles reported that Zampella died in a car crash on Sunday afternoon on the Angeles Crest Highway. The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash at 12:43 p.m. on Sunday, but did not identify the victims due to privacy protocols. Authorities stated that the vehicle had veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier, resulting in the deaths of both the driver and passenger.

Zampella, a visionary figure in the gaming industry, was widely recognized for his monumental contributions to modern video games. EA paid tribute to his legacy in a statement, describing him as someone whose work “helped shape modern interactive entertainment” and “inspired millions of players and developers around the world.”
“This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince’s family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work,” EA added. “Vince’s influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching.”
Zampella’s name became synonymous with Call of Duty, one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. He co-founded Infinity Ward, the studio that developed the original Call of Duty in 2003, which led to a series of popular and enduring first-person shooter titles. The latest installment in the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, was released last month.
In addition to Call of Duty, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the Titanfall series and Apex Legends. EA acquired Respawn Entertainment in 2017. Zampella also served as the leader of DICE LA, a key studio within EA known for developing the Battlefield series. Under his guidance, Battlefield 6 was released in October 2025.
The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) expressed its sorrow at Zampella’s passing, highlighting his leadership and creativity in the industry. “His leadership, creativity, & generosity inspired all who worked with him,” AIAS wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Vince’s impact will be felt for generations.”
The Battlefield series, created by DICE, also honored Zampella. In a statement, they called him “a creative leader whose work shaped generations of players and helped define what modern shooters and action games could be.” The studio emphasized Zampella’s role in guiding Battlefield with care, always prioritizing the community and the franchise’s long-term future.
Zampella’s career spanned some of the most iconic video game franchises, including Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi. His vision and leadership helped shape the gaming landscape as we know it today.
