Spanish authorities are investigating the death of a livestreamer after a paid online broadcast turned fatal inside his family home near Barcelona.
Sergio Jimenez, 37, was found dead while his camera was still live after agreeing to stream himself drinking a full bottle of whiskey and consuming large amounts of cocaine within a three-hour window. According to Spanish media, viewers had allegedly paid to watch the dangerous challenge unfold in real time.
The incident took place in the town of Vilanova i la Geltrú, where Jimenez lived with his mother and younger brother. His body was discovered in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.
Jimenez’s mother told local outlet El Periódico that she noticed something was wrong shortly before 2 a.m.
“I got up to go to the bathroom and saw the door to his room was ajar,” she said. “I asked him what he was doing, but he didn’t answer.”
She said items were blocking the doorway, preventing her from entering the room. One of her other sons, Daniel, managed to get inside and immediately realized Sergio was dead. Emergency services were called, but it was too late.
Daniel later described a disturbing scene inside the bedroom.
“There was an almost empty bottle of whisky, a couple of energy drink cans, and a pile of cocaine on a red plate,” he said. “My brother was kneeling on the floor with his head resting on the mattress. The computer was on, and I could hear voices asking him if he was sleeping off his hangover.”
Jimenez’s mother told police that her son had been taking medication for psychiatric issues and that she had repeatedly begged him not to drink alcohol while on the medication. She said Sergio ignored her warnings and told her he planned to stop taking his pills so he could drink.
Spanish police say the case is now being treated as the country’s first known fatality tied to an extreme livestreaming stunt. Investigators are examining whether any viewers or organizers could face criminal liability for inciting dangerous behavior.
According to reports, Jimenez was broadcasting to a private group that paid him to perform increasingly risky challenges in exchange for cash. Authorities have not confirmed whether charges will be filed, but say the investigation could expand.
Jimenez was reportedly attempting to emulate Simon Perez, a controversial online figure known in Spain for performing shocking, drug-fueled stunts during livestreams in return for money. Perez, who had previously appeared in videos with Jimenez, addressed the death in a video posted to YouTube.
“He’s passed away,” Perez said. “I’ve been told he took six grams of cocaine in three hours. A two-gram line alone can cause an overdose. It could have happened to me — but it happened to Sergio.”
