Officer Saves Choking Toddler’s Life at Airport in Heart-Stopping Moment

A terrifying moment at JFK Airport turned into a lifesaving miracle thanks to the quick thinking of a Port Authority police officer.

The dramatic rescue happened January 5 at around 6:17 p.m. outside Terminal 4, when a panicked mother desperately flagged down an officer for help. Her 2-year-old son was choking on a lollipop in the back seat of their car and struggling to breathe.

Port Authority Police Department Officer Elijah Ali was on patrol nearby when he saw the frantic mom waving him over. Without hesitation, he sprinted to the vehicle.

“I hopped out of my car and ran to his window and told him my son was choking,” the child’s mother, Jennifer, recalled. “He ran straight to my car and to my son.”

Jennifer had been driving to pick up her husband when the emergency unfolded. Within seconds of reaching the child, Officer Ali began performing back blows between the toddler’s shoulder blades. Moments later, the obstruction was dislodged, and the little boy was finally able to breathe again.

Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly afterward, but thanks to the officer’s fast response, the child did not require additional medical treatment.

The boy’s father, who was just arriving at the airport at the time, expressed overwhelming gratitude for the officer’s swift action. For the family, what could have been a tragedy ended in pure relief.

With three years on the job, Officer Ali has already been credited with saving lives before, including reviving two overdose victims using Narcan. He says moments like this are exactly why he chose his career.

“The commitment to serving and helping others is the reason I chose this profession,” Ali said. “It’s what brings me the greatest sense of fulfillment.”

The Port Authority later praised the rescue, noting that its officers train for the unexpected and are always ready to act when every second counts.
