Police Officer Shot Multiple Times After Being Ambushed Outside Station (Video)

Authorities have released new details — along with surveillance video — in the investigation into a violent ambush that wounded a Greenville, SC police officer and ended with the suspect’s death after a pursuit.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the shooting happened on Jan. 11 outside the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center. Investigators say a man opened fire on a police officer who was sitting inside a marked patrol vehicle.

The officer was struck by gunfire and rushed to the hospital, but has since been released and is expected to recover.

SLED said the suspect fired multiple rounds believed to be incendiary ammunition — a type of ammo designed to ignite and cause extreme damage upon impact.

Surveillance footage shows the suspect’s vehicle driving through an otherwise empty parking lot before pulling up next to the officer’s cruiser. Moments later, flashes and sparks can be seen striking the patrol car as gunfire erupts. The suspect then sped away from the scene.

Greenville County sheriff’s deputies later located the suspect’s vehicle, triggering a pursuit. Authorities said shots were exchanged during the chase, which ended in a crash involving both law enforcement and the suspect’s vehicle.

After the pursuit came to a stop, investigators said another exchange of gunfire occurred.

The suspect was later found dead inside his vehicle. The Greenville County Coroner ruled the death a suicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head, according to local reporting.

Law enforcement officials revealed they were familiar with the suspect prior to the ambush. Earlier in January, deputies had responded to multiple complaints from neighbors who reported concerning behavior and alarming statements. While each incident was investigated, officials said the behavior did not meet the legal threshold for an arrest at the time.

Out of caution, authorities said the apartment complex where the suspect lived coordinated with the sheriff’s office to have off-duty deputies provide security beginning Jan. 8.

Neighbors and former coworkers described a troubling pattern in the weeks leading up to the shooting. According to reports, the suspect allegedly made threats of violence, referenced firearms, and expressed paranoia about neighbors, at times suggesting he was prepared to use a weapon.

The investigation into the ambush and pursuit remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence and video related to the case.
