Retired Couple Dies 3 Days Apart After ‘Tragic’ Scuba Diving Accident 

A beloved retired couple from England who spent nearly two decades returning to the same tropical paradise for the holidays have tragically died just days apart while vacationing in the Maldives.

Elaine and Malcolm Richmond, ages 70 and 71, were in the Maldives celebrating Christmas when they were involved in what has been described as a scuba diving accident. The couple were staying on the island of Ellaidhoo, a destination they knew well after visiting every Christmas for the past 17 years.

According to their funeral home, Stubbins and Hope, the couple encountered an “accident” while diving. Funeral director Simon Hope declined to share specific details but told U.K. media that there were no criminal or suspicious circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Elaine died on December 19. Her husband Malcolm passed away just three days later, on December 22.

The Richmonds, who lived in the Derbyshire village of Inkersall, had no children. Their nearest relative, a niece who lives near Manchester, has been notified of their deaths.

A coroner’s investigation into the couple’s deaths is expected to be opened at Chesterfield coroner’s court on January 30, according to reports.

In a notice shared on the funeral home’s website, Stubbins and Hope announced that Elaine and Malcolm’s joint funeral will be held on January 29 at noon at Brimington Crematorium in Chesterfield. The message described the couple as having “tragically passed away just days apart at Christmas” and invited all who knew them to attend and celebrate their lives. Donations made in their memory will go to Ashgate Hospice.

Friends and fellow travelers say the Maldives wasn’t just a vacation spot for the Richmonds — it was a second home. Photos shared on Malcolm’s Facebook page show both Elaine and Malcolm were experienced scuba divers, and they were deeply embedded in the island’s tight-knit visitor community.

A tribute posted in a Facebook group called Maldives Holidaymakers described the couple as cherished members who had visited Ellaidhoo more than 60 times, including three trips in 2025 alone.

“They were very popular with all the staff and made countless friends over their many visits,” the post read. “They will be sadly missed by family and the many friends they made. RIP Elaine and Malcolm.”

Ellaidhoo is located about 26 miles west of Malé and is accessible only by boat or seaplane — a remote slice of paradise that became part of the Richmonds’ holiday tradition for nearly two decades.
